Metrolink Fares to Remain the Same for 2011-12

The Metrolink Board of Directors passes a 2011-12 budget that allows for more onboard service but no rate hike.

Fares for Metrolink passengers are to stay at their current levels for the 2011-12 year, with better service planned for riders.

The Metrolink Board of Directors passed a 2011-12 budget Thursday that calls for new trains, better customer service and no base fare increases.

"That's good news," said commuter Mike Cavenaugh, who stood on the Moorpark train platform Monday morning. Calling fares "already a little high," he said, "It's worth it, though, to not have to make that drive and fight traffic every morning."

In total, Metrolink has added or will add 22 new trains, including the two new trains that began operating on the Ventura County Line, which passes through Moorpark, on May 9, 2012.

The new customer service inititive, called C.O.A.T., or the customer onboard assistance team, adds onboard personnel who can provide service and information to customers during their commute.

"I am pleased that our board and staff worked with our member agencies to develop a budget that gives our passengers more transportation options, enhanced safety and even better customer service without a fare increase," said Metrolink Board Chairman Richard Katz in a statement issued by Metrolink. "Additionally, through smart, tough decision-making, Metrolink expects to end the 2010-2011 fiscal year under budget."

The cost of the additional train service and new programs is being offset by operational savings, efficiencies gained by restructuring contracts and an anticipated increase in fare revenue as a result of increased ridership, according to the statement.
