Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive

Residents can leave non-perishable food items right next to their mailbox.

Today, Saturday, May 12, postal workers across the country will lend a hand in an effort to "Stamp Out Hunger."  They will collect bags and boxes of non-perishable food items left by residents along their postal routes.

Participation is simple. Ventura County residents don’t even need to leave their homes to make a difference. Non-perishable food items can be left right next to mailboxes for the letter carriers to collect.

As a reminder, food banks ask that people don’t use this as an opportunity to get rid of expired or undesirable items.

In Ventura County, food will be donated to FOOD Share, the county's main food bank which helps provide food year-round to more that 74,000 children, adults, seniors and families every month.

This year’s drive promises to be a much needed boost to food banks and pantries as the demand for food assistance continues to increase.

Now in its 20th year, the "Stamp Out Hunger" effort is the nation’s biggest single-day food drive, benefiting food banks around the country.

Many residents were given reminder cards and empty grocery bags in their mailboxes this week courtesy of Ralphs Supermarkets. However, any sturdy bag or box can be used.

Food banks hope to receive non-glass, non-perishable items such as canned soups, fruits or vegetables, canned meats or tuna, peanut butter, and rice, cereal or pasta.

Residents can also drop off food donations at the following locations: East Ventura Post Office, 41 S. Wake Forest Ave.; Ventura Main Post Office, 675 E. Santa Clara St.; Oxnard Main Post Office, 1961 N. "C" St.; and Thousand Oaks Main Post Office, 3435 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd.
