Deputies to Trade Badges for Barbecue

A Sheriff's Department tip-a-cop event takes place Thursday.

Sheriff's deputies protect and serve all day, every day. But on Thursday, they'll be taking interpreting their oaths to serve in a whole new way. Instead of serving justice, they'll be serving ribs to help raise money for Ventura County Special Olympics.

From 5 to 9:30 p.m., Ventura County sheriff's deputies will take part in a tip-a-cop event at Wood Ranch BBQ and Grill. They'll fill the role of servers and will donate all tips their receive to Special Olympics.

In addition, police vehicles will be on display, McGruff the Crime Dog and sheriff's K-9s will be on hand and there will be free giveaways for kids.
