MPC 25th anniversary service & lunch

Moorpark Presbyterian Church turning 25!  Community invited to celebration service and meal marking 25th anniversary of first worship service of local church

In 1986, ‘Top Gun’ was a top movie, ‘The Cosby Show’ ruled the TV airwaves, Duran Duran first hit the music charts – and, in Moorpark, a small group of people gathered for the first worship service of Moorpark Presbyterian Church.  Now, twenty-five years later, MPC is marking its silver anniversary and invites the community to join them Sunday, November 13 at 10am for a special celebration service followed by a delicious free meal.

“It will be a time full of joy, music, memories and thankfulness to God and to the community for our past, our present and our future,” says Pastor Dave Wilkinson.  “We are inviting the community as they have been such a part of us – and us such a part of them – that it’s fitting we celebrate together.”

“MPC has always been involved in community activities,” adds Associate Pastor Janet Loughry, “from working with Catholic Charities, Sarah’s House and other organizations to sprucing up local schools to marching in the Country Days parade.”

And it all started twenty-five years ago.  Wilkinson, MPC’s Pastor for all 25 years, remembers being asked, “How will you plant and grow a new church?” “I answered that I knew how to help a church grow if I had 25 people to work with but I had no idea how to get 25 people.  I didn’t know God was so into exact numbers; our first service had exactly 25 people in worship!”

The church has grown from 25 to over 500 and from renting space at Chaparral Middle School to building a Fellowship Hall, Education/Office Building and, three years ago, a Sanctuary.   Yet, as Loughry notes, “Our mission remains the same: glorifying God and helping people become fully devoted, joyful disciples of Jesus Christ.”
