Luke and Leia Visit Moorpark Library

The library hosted a Star Wars Day Saturday.

The Moorpark City Library celebrated National Library Card Month by hosting a Star Wars Day Saturday.

Librarians planned the event to draw people to the library, where they could sign up for a card.

"Star Wars Day is fun just for Star Wars Day, but the whole point is to get people into the library," said Heather Cousin, city librarian. "It gets them in, it gets them excited and they realize we have so many other things available."

Cousin said there are currently about 15,000 active library cards, which accounts for a little under half the city population, but she hopes to build that number to at least 75 percent.

The event featured arts and crafts, a costume contest and a Chewbacca look alike contest for pets. As well, special guests from the 501st Storm Troopers Southern California Garrison, a volunteer group of costumed Star Wars fans, were on hand to take photos with the children.
