Saturday is 'Star Wars' Day at the Library

The event is part of Library Card Sign-Up Month celebrations.

Watch for droids, storm troopers and maybe even Darth Vader or Chewbaca to descend upon the Saturday for Star Wars Day.

To celebrate National Library Card Sign-Up Month, the library will host a Star Wars-themed day of fun with costume contests for children, teens and adults, special guest readers for storytimes, wookie cookie decorating and a Chewbacca pet look-alike contest. As well, members of the 501st Storm Troopers’ Southern California Garrison, a volunteer group of costumed Star Wars fans are scheduled to appear.

City Librarian Heather Cousin is hoping the event will draw new patrons to the library.

“We want people to have fun, and we also want to encourage them to see how much the library has to offer,” said Cousin.

“Owning a Moorpark City Library card opens up a world of possibilities,” said Cousin.

In addition to an extensive print collection, the Moorpark City Library provides free Internet access, online tutoring and a  collection of DVDs, magazines and music.

For a little extra Star Wars fun, the library has been running a Where’s Yoda game on Facebook where readers try to guess where in Moorpark a Yoda puppet photo was taken. Check out the Moorpark City Library Facebook page to play along.

To encourage new library card applications, the Library will give prizes to those who sign-up for a new Moorpark City Library card during September.

Star Wars Day runs from 1 to 3 p.m. at the library, 699 Moorpark Ave.
