Moorpark's Microbrewery to Celebrate First Year

At a year old, Enegren Brewing Company has already doubled production since opening.

Moorpark's first and only microbrewery will celebrate its first anniversary Saturday with a community open house.

The Enegren Brewing Company has come a long way since Patch .

At the time of its planning commission permit meeting, partners Joe Nascenzi and Matt and Chris Enegren had been brewing beer in a garage as a hobby. Chris Enegren explained to the commission that the trio wanted to start the company and sell beer to cover the cost of brewing it. The commission approved the permit, with conditions involving tasting limits.

As of July 11, those restrictions were lifted and the brewery is now able to pour more tastings than ever before. As well, the brewery has been busy installing upgrades to improve efficiency and expand capacity and has doubled production since opening. Read about the improvements on the brewery's often-amusing blog.

It's also been busy with special tastings at area restaurants like Moorpark's Cafe Firenze and Larsen's Grill in Simi Valley, winning medals at beer competitions and taking part in the Moorpark Rotary Club's beer festival.

To commemorate its anniversary, the company has brewed what they are calling "a special doppelsticke (double secret) batch of their flagship beer, Valkyrie California Altbier." The one-time batch is brewed with Gernman malts and American and German hops and aged in French oak. The brewers describe the beer as having a unique raisin, caramel and biscuit flavor with a subtle spicy oak finish.

Six other beers will be on tap at the event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at the brewery at 680 Flinn Ave., Unit 31. In addition to the beer, Germany's Famous Bratwurst food truck will be at the brewery from 1 to 4 p.m. with food to purchase and commemorative first anniversary glasses will be available for purchase.
