5 Things to Know Today: March 31

Here are five facts to start your weekend.

Welcome to "5 Things to Know Today," a daily Patch feature that provides five quick tidbits of information in one spot. Here they are:

  1. Today is Cesar Chavez Day, an official state holiday in California and some other states, but not a federal holiday. Chavez was a farm worker and labor leader who co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, which is now known as the United Farm Workers. While there aren't any celebrations in Moorpark, there will be a half-mile march in Oxnard, where he lived as a child and returned to in the late 1950s. The march begins with mass at Cristo de Rey Church, 531 Cooper Road, at 9 a.m. and will be followed by a celebration at 11 a.m. at Cesar Chavez School. The event is free and open to the public.
  2. continues tonight at Moorpark High School. The performance is at 7 p.m. school's performing arts center. Tickets are $7.
  3. Recycle with brAvery, a recycling effort spearheaded by Moorpark's Avery Sax, 11, is having its latest recycling event Friday and Saturday. If you'd like to help Avery reach her goal for the community of recycling 100,000 beverage containers, bring them to a participating rePlanet Recycling Center (the one in Moorpark is at 101 W. Los Angeles Ave. and is open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and tell the on-site employee that you are recycling for brAvery.
  4. The National Weather Service is predicting a high near 62 degrees and a low near 46 degrees. The National Weather Service is predicting a 20 percent chance of rain today growing to a 40 percent chance into the evening.
  5. Moorpark's lowest price per gallon for regular gas holds steady at $4.31, according to GasBuddy.com. Find it at the Union 76 station at 13800 Princeton Ave.
