5 Things to Know Today: Nov. 24

Happy Thanksgiving, Moorpark.

Moorpark Patch wishes you and your families a very happy Thanksgiving.

Welcome to "5 Things You Need to Know Today," a daily Patch feature that provides five quick tidbits of information in one spot. Usually, the focus is on happenings in town, but today we have something a little different:

  1. President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863. In 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt moved the holiday forward a week, where it's currently celebrated.
  2. Since 1947, the National Turkey Federation has presented the country's president with a live turkey, which he pardons. After the ceremony, the live bird is sent to Mount Vernon to live out the rest of its natural life. The two dressed turkeys that the NTF also presents to the president aren't as lucky...
  3. According to the NTF, turkey consumption has increased 102 percent since 1970 due to the recognition of its nutritional value. In 2010, U.S. residents ate about 16.4 pounds of turkey per person.
  4. In 2011, an estimated 244 million turkeys will be raised in the United States.
  5. Small pockets of air inside cranberries allow them to bounce as well as float in water, according to the cranberryfarmers.org website.
