Adult Center Active With Classes and Events

From container gardening to mousing around with the computer, it's happening at the Active Adult Center.

The Moorpark Active Adult Center has plenty of activities planned for June. The center offers free activities for seniors daily as well as special classes and events throughout the month.

Here are just a few of the activities taking place during the first half of the month:

Black Swan screening: 12:45 p.m. Friday. The center screens a movie every Friday. This week, the featured movie is Black Swan, featuring Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis and Vincent Cassel, is about a “ballet dancer who wins the lead in "Swan Lake" and is perfect for the role of the delicate White Swan - Princess Odette - but slowly loses her mind as she becomes more and more like Odile, the Black Swan,” according to the Internet Movie Database.

Music through the Ages: 11 a.m. to noon June 8. Bernadette Nader teaches this once-a-month class, which takes place on the second Wednesday of each month. Over the course of a year, the music appreciation class will cover the history of song in America, with monthly themes. Sessions will provide information about the songwriters, artists, music from the movies and stories behind the scene, as well as the opportunity for participants to sing songs. This month’s theme is Sing the Songs of Stars. Call to reserve a spot.

Container Gardening class: 9 to 10:30 a.m. June 9. This once-a-month class features changing themes with students completing a new container garden in each class. This month, students will learn about succulent plants. The class, which is taught by Carla Shaw, is free; however, registration is required.

The Social Network screening: 12:45 p.m. June 10. The Social Network, starring Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake, is the story of Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg and his social network.

Meet the Mouse: 10 to 11 a.m. June 13. Instructor Sonny Levenbach teaches this class for those who are brand new to computing. The class meets on the second Monday of each month. It’s free, but advance registration is required.
