Children to Experience Rancho Lifestyle at Reyes Adobe Days

This weekend is all about children, families and a bygone era at the Reyes Adobe Historical Site.

This weekend's area events aim to get us back to our roots.

In Moorpark, we have Country Days Saturday. But if you're looking to get out of town, try visiting Reyes Adobe Days in Agoura.

Have you ever wondered how life was like in the 1800s? How did people live before electronics, the Internet and other modern-day conveniences?

During the 7th Annual Reyes Adobe Days, kids will get a peek into early Southern California ranch life. The setting is the Reyes Adobe Historical Site, Agoura Hills’ first home and a repository of California’s rich history.

Dubbed “A Day at the Adobe,” the weekend event, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., will keep children engaged and involved through hands-on rancho era activities reminiscent of the 'old days' when families spent most of their time outdoors.

“Tortilla making is one of the new activities this year,” said Zach Miller, recreation manager of the City of Agoura Hills.

Using just flour and water, children will try their hand at this activity. The goal is to give them a glimpse of what simple indoor food preparation was like back then before cooking outdoors in large kettles over open fires.

In true ranch fashion, children will also have front row seats to historical demonstrations that illustrate the simplicity of life back then and the resourcefulness of parents in finding educational activities for their kids.

There will be sewing and gardening activities, as well arts and crafts projects where participants can expect to bring home their “masterpieces” at the end of the day, said Miller.

Games, inflatable structures, pony rides and a petting zoo will also be at the historical site throughout the weekend. In addition to all of the activities, there will be free museum tours.

Food and beverages can also be purchased from various vendors during the two-day affair.

To top it all, there will be live entertainment featuring DJ Heart to Heart, Drumtime, mariachi bands, marimba bands, local school jazz bands and strolling acts.

On Saturday, Latin jazz band Orquesta Charangoa will be performing at 3 p.m. Sunday’s main attraction is “Face to Face,” the Billy Joel and Elton John tribute which will start at 2:30 pm.

The two-day glimpse into the Rancho era might be short in time but not in action.

“Children can expect to stay busy for hours with all the great stuff we have planned,” said Miller.
