Escape to Hollywood

Movie time can equal 'me time.'

If you manage to get about two hours for yourself, one way to make an escape is through your DVD or Blu-ray player! Movies can easily take your mind off of things. They can make you laugh, cry or cringe (if you happen to get stuck with a bad movie)—or all three.

I can’t say what my favorite movie is, I thought I’d share a few you might also like to try out. For Christmas, my husband got me one the 45th anniversary collector’s gift set of Rodger’s & Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music. I love this movie but have to confess I have yet to open it. Still, I look forward to the time I’ll set aside to be taken away and watch Julie Andrews as “Maria” spin around the top of the mountain singing the title song. The scenery alone is an escape and I love a good musical.

Another movie that I haven’t seen in awhile, but it is a favorite, is Love Actually. I adore the ensemble cast (which includes Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth) and the different story lines that run through this R-rated film. I know that there have been American films that have tried to do the same thing as Love Actually, but I enjoy this British film more.

One of my guilty pleasure movies stars Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. It’s a PG-rated romantic comedy called Overboard. Every time I happen upon it channel surfing, I always end up watching it.

Now, I’m not too into horror films (OK, I’m not into them at all), but I can enjoy films that make me grab tight for a pillow or for my husband— as  long as they’re not too gory. The Others fits that bill. I haven’t seen the movie in awhile, but I’ve thought of putting it into the Blu-ray player one of these days soon. The PG-13 movie stars Nicole Kidman and IMDB describes it like this: “A woman who lives in a darkened old house with her two photosensitive children becomes convinced that her family home is haunted.”

In addition to our vast collection of DVDs, my husband and I also rent movies through Netflix. Admittedly, we do have movies that have been waiting to be watched for at least a couple of months and have just pared down our membership, but it’s a convenient way to get the latest movies. Incidentally, Netflix can be streamed through many devices: game consoles (Xbox360, Playstation 3, Wii), Internet TV devices and many Blu-ray players.

Though the store in Moorpark is closing, the company also delivers movies by mail as well as on demand on your TV, PC or mobile phone, similar to Netflix’s streams, according to its website.

However you decide to watch your movie of choice, go microwave a bag of popcorn, have your beverage nearby, sit back and escape!
