Neuter High Pet Costs

Pet ownership doesn't have to put you in the poor house.

Some experts will advise that not having pets can be helpful in times of financial stress due to the related expense. For those of us who have pets, they’re a part of our family and can help make troubles, well . . . less troubling.

It’s true there are costs associated with having any kind of pet, but by loading up on a few simple tips, we can help keep those expenses down and keep these lovable critters in our lives.

One of the largest and ongoing expenses is food. Ideally, you want to buy the best food possible, as providing good nutrition prevents illness and disease. Just like humans, if we pets poorly, their health suffers. Major pet food brands can cost as much as $10 more than a store or generic brand version, but if you compare the labels you will notice there are not large differences in the ingredients.

The FDA has regulations—even on pet foods—and every market brand must meet guidelines to be a safe product.

Don’t over-feed your pet. Obesity in pets can lead to many of the same health problems that humans suffer. Learn what the correct amount of food your particular pet needs. This will not only keep the cost of food reasonable, but keep the vet bills down, as well.

Another way to keep your pet healthy is to keep up with immunizations. Contact your local Animal Control/Humane Society and ask about any upcoming city or county-sponsored vaccinations days. They should also have information on other low-cost services such as spaying and neutering.

Skip the fancy collars, toys and outfits. Most of these are for the two-legged owners’ amusement. The pet could care less and such imaginative gear offers zero toward your pet’s care.

Do invest in toys and treats that contribute to the pet’s health. Chew toys for dental health and collars with identifying information are good investments.

Keep your pet properly restrained and out of harm’s way. Every type of pet is more susceptible to certain types of injuries and planning ahead can prevent a frantic run to the pet emergency clinic.

Do your own grooming. A good pet trimming device will pay for itself over and over again, as will a good nail trimmer. It only takes a little practice to learn to groom your pet and pets always have a positive response to the attention.

Call around to veterinarians and compare costs. Many different types of pets need annual health check-ups for good health, and the fee can vary greatly from vet to vet. It’s also a good idea to get to know a vet in the event a professional might ever be needed. Vets also have good references for pet insurance should you decide the breed of animal you have warrants it.

If you have questions and just want a resource for information, check out www.PetMD.com. Just like the WebMD for humans, there’s an information site for our furry friends. PetMD has information on dogs, cats and horses. For other types of pets simply do an internet search or check the library for information.

Don’t give up on having a pet. Simply arm yourself with good information and you’re sure to keep a loving relationship for many years—and at the lowest possible cost.
