Pretty Little Piggies

This low-cost pedicure makes footing the bill easy.

One’s feet can get quite the work out chasing after little ones, so why not make an escape to a salon and get a pedicure?

A friend and I recently decided to do just that while my daughter was on her standing play date with her grandmother.

There are tons of nail salons in Moorpark so the only problem in finding a place is narrowing down where to go. I clicked onto Patch’s free business directory and decided to visit Jennifer’s Nails & Hair salon on High Street.

Although I’ve seen shows at the High Street Arts Center, which is next to Jennifer’s, I confess I’d never noticed the nail and hair place before. Owned by Jennifer Tu, the business has been around for 11 years.

The place is small, but quite charming, decorated with an angel theme. Tu shared that a strand of angels hanging across the room was originally just Christmas decoration, but a customer convinced her to leave the cherubs up.

The pedicure Jennifer’s Nails & Hair offers is fairly standard and includes soaking your feet in a tub of warm water (ooh), while a massage machine on your chair takes care of your back (aah). There is a scrub, a massage with lotion and a hot towel leg wrap, as well as nail filing and painting—relaxing music playing in the background all the while.

It’s worth noting that this salon doesn’t have the combination massage and tub adjustable chairs common in nail salons now days. But we didn’t miss the all-in-one chairs and my friend and I enjoyed this experience as we sat near each other, catching up on things for the 40 minutes or so the pedicures took.

Annie La, the technician who worked with me, was conscientious and checked with me often about my preferences and comfort. She recommended that clients get a pedicure every two weeks, but at least once a month.

I don’t have pedicures very often, but there was something that I experienced for the first time at Jennifer’s that I’ve never experienced at other places: nail enamel dryer spray! I had never heard of such a thing, but when my friend and I were ready to go, this was the very thing that was sprayed over our toenails to ensure that the polish would set quicker. Genius!

With all that came with the pedicure, we were amazed to learn that the cost of the service was just $15! Compare that with the usual $40 or so salons often charge for a similar treatment.

Yes, you can take the time to paint your own toenails, but it sure is nice getting pampered once in awhile.

Jennifer’s Nails & Hair is at 71 E. High St. It’s open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. The business’ busier days are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, but appointments are preferred in general. For more information or to make an appointment, call 523-7822.
