7th Annual William French Smith Memorial Lecture: How the Data Revolution is Challenging Our Expectations About Security and Privacy

Lecture Topic:
Big Data as Big Brother: How the Data Revolution is Challenging Our Expectations About Security and Privacy

Sponsored by Pepperdine University, the 7th Annual William French Smith Memorial Lecture will feature former U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. From 2005-09, Chertoff led the US in blocking would-be terrorists from crossing our borders and keeping those already in our country from implementing their plans. He also transformed FEMA into an effective organization following Hurricane Katrina. His greatest successes have earned few headlines because what’s important is what didn’t happen.

Before heading up the Department of Homeland Security, Chertoff served as a federal judge on the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Chertoff currently serves as chairman of the Chertoff Group where he provides high-level strategic counsel to corporate and government leaders on a broad range of security issues, including risk prevention, crisis management and post-crisis recovery.
