Get Out for Some Weekend Fun

The weekend's coming, and if you don't have plans for it yet, Patch can help. Here's a list of events and activities in Moorpark and not too far away.

An American Panorama Summer Concert: The New West Symphony and the City of Westlake Village present this free concert featuring pianist Norman Krieger performing Gershwin, Beethoven & Chopin, Grammy Award-winning pianist Roger Kellaway and his trio and Visions of America photographer Joseph Sohm as special guest narrator. The show begins at 7 p.m. Friday at the Westlake Village Civic Center, 31200 Oak Crest Drive, Westlake Village. Bring your own refreshments or you can purchse pizza at the concert.

Live Melodrama: Rex Bravo, the Whistling Cowboy—Showdown at the Bombay Corral has brought melodrama back to Moorpark. The show returns to the High Street Arts Center's stage for its second week at 8 p.m. Friday. Shows run at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays through Sept. 23. Tickets are $20 for adults, $16 for seniors, students, teachers and military personnel and $12 for children 12 and younger.

Malibu Chili Cook-Off: This 31st annual event, hosted by the Malibu Kiwanis, takes place all weekend, beginning Friday from 6 to 10 p.m. then 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at Civic Center Way adn Stuart Ranch Road in Malibu. In addition to chili, the cook-off features a carnival, fair, entertainment, a silent auction and food for sale. The entrance fee is $10 for adults and $5 for children 5 to 11 years. Chicken Little: Fairy Tales in the Park, staged by Gypsies in a Trunk, will offer a free performance of Chicken Little at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Foxfield Park, 31965 Foxfield Drive, Westlake Village and at 4 p.m. Saturday at Rancho Simi Community Park, 1765 Royal Ave., Simi Valley. It's also being performed at 2 p.m. Sunday in Oxnard at Channel Islands Harbor's Harbor View Park, located between Marine Emporium Landing & Port Royal Restaurant, near 3600 Harbor Blvd., Oxnard. The shows are free, but donations are accepted.

L.A. County Fair: This one's a little (ok, a lot) further, but it's a really big fair and could be a fun day trip. The Los Angles County Fair runs from Aug. 31 through Sept. 30. Billing itself as the largest county fair in North America, this year the L.A. County Fair has an entertainment lineup including The Wanted, Carly Rae Jepsen, Grand Funk Railroad and Burton Cummings, the B52s, Styx Ramón Ayala, George Benson and Chaka Khan, Tower of Power, Boyz ll Men, the Charlie Daniels Band and Earth, Wind and Fire. Check the fair's website for the entertainment schedule and a daily schedule of events. The fair is open Wednesdays through Sundays. This weekend, the fair will be open from 3 p.m.m to midnight Friday, 10 a.m. to midnight Saturday and Sunday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday, which is Labor Day. After opening weekend, it will be open at noon on week days and 10 a.m. on weekends. Weekend admission is $17 for those 13 and older, $12 for children 6 to 12, $13 for seniors 60 and older and children 5 and younger get in free. Week day addmission is $12, $7, and $9. Children 5 and younger get in free on week days as well. Parking is $12 on week days and $15 on weekends. The fair grounds are at 1101 W. McKinley Ave., Pomona.
