Postal Service Should Discontinue Saturday Mail Delivery

When the Main Post Office in Moorpark was moved to a new location a couple of years ago Moorpark dwellers were told, was chosen to help bring foot traffic to High Street.

About 10 years ago in Canada the decision was made to do away with Saturday mail delivery based on a projection that people are going to use the ability to mail letters less and less because the Internet is growing so fast that much of traditional mail will be sent via e-mail.

Now here in the United States the same discussion goes on and on and on. Delivered mail more and more will be promotional materials with traditional mail going the way of electronic mail.

Here in Moorpark, the store that was a post office at Campus Park has closed, so I went to the post office downtown on the weekend. There is the new post office that opened a couple of years ago with a location that Moorpark dwellers were told was chosen to help bring foot traffic to High Street. It is apparent, however, the location was selected to provide for space to park the mail trucks. The office itself is not much, if any, larger than the post office that used to be located next to the Ralphs store. It was staffed with one person this Saturday and there were lines, but the young man did a good job and was polite.

The purpose of this blog post is to suggest that Saturday delivery of mail should be discontinued by the Postal Service. It has been talked to death and—with the exception of the announced closing of many post office locations and the discussion of increasing some prices—a serious, effective transition for the Postal Service in this new century is lacking.

One issue I did not understand while standing in line was there were no prices for the extras being sold (envelopes of various sizes and on and on). I did not understand that, but there must be a good reason.

Life is always about transition. It’s always about what we can and cannot control. Changes in technology will create a snowball affect that requires other change or we will be left behind in life.  Where did I put that forever stamp? Must have left it behind. Darn.
