What is it that makes a woman react differently that a man when they see a runner in the street?

As a runner of many years one of the things I notice is when I run the streets if a women is driving or a man is driving each reacts differently when they see a runner.

I am a runner and have run for years, approximately 25 years. I usually run the streets because when I run in a race, a 5K, 10K, half marathons—and I’ve done 9 L.A. Marathons over the years—it usually gives me time to think about silly things.

When I am running the streets, I usually run against the traffic for safety.  One thing I’ve noticed over the years is when a women is driving, she usually will move over to her left a little to make sure I have room for my running. If it’s a man driving, some will look straight ahead, not slow down—even speed up—and some may indicate they see me and, like the women drivers, slow down and move to the left a little to provide a little more room for me.

My thought is this: Woman have less testosterone and are more likely to be cautious and careful and thoughtful when they see a runner; Men have more testosterone and are exercising their right to be less flexible because they are MEN and can just barrel through, showing no or little consideration. It’s like a stand-up comedy routine that might be given by Tim Allen who used to do the TV series Home Improvement. So some of the sound effects he used when doing his stand up comedy routine and be inserted in this blog at this time by those who remember how he used to do that: Real Men…

My other thought is some women may have more testosterone so those are the exceptions when they will barrel through, look straight ahead and even speed up.

Of course the reverse is probably true for some men, older men who may have less testosterone for whatever reason, and they have learned to be me more flexible and feel it is past that time when it’s necessary to exercise male -iven right or responsibility to show “they are men,” so they don’t think it’s necessary to speed up barrel on through and ignore that there is a runner in the street.

All these observations are purely that. When I’m doing a long run, I find I thinking about and solve the problems of the world and can also think about life shattering things like why do some people slow down and others speed up when they see a runner.
