Sermon to Explore 'Gilligan's Island'

Pastor to use the show's characters to teach about vices.

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale a Moorpark Presbyterian Church this weekend. Pastor Dave Wilkinson will be delivering a sevein-week sermon series based on the classic Gilligan's Island television show beginning Sunday.

The series, called Avoiding Rocks That Can Shipwreck Your Life: Gilligan's Island and the Seven Deadly Sins, will use the characters in the television series to teach about vices. Gilligan, the Skipper too, the millionaire and his wife, the movie star, the professor and Mary Ann each represent one of the seven deadly sins, according to Wilkinson.

“Pride, envy, anger, sloth, greed, gluttony and lust – the seven deadly sins – are not necessarily what we think they are,” he said. “For example, sloth, exemplified by Gilligan and in the Bible by King David, isn’t really about being lazy. It’s about saying, ‘Whatever’ to life; It’s about not caring.”

Associate Pastor Janet Loughry noted that in addition to the sermons, guests will also have the opportunity to join small discussion groups to share the lessons of the week, delivered in a light-hearted way.

Wilkinson noted the series coincides with the seasson of Lent, a time of spiritual renewal and growth in the days leading up to Easter.

"So this study isn't about making us feel bad about ourselves or humanity in general," he said. "It's purpose is to see how we can actually change—or at least greatly lessen the impact of these things in our lives."

Services will be at the church, 13950 Peach Hill Road at 8:15 and 10:45 a.m. (which means it will be less than a three-hour cruise...).
