Weekend Fun: April 28-29

There's plenty going on this weekend, both in town and nearby.

SATURDAY

Day Out With Thomas the Tank: Fillmore and Western Railway is celebrating a day out with Thomas the Tank. The event features a 25-minute ride, an "imagination station" with stamps, temporary tattoos, hands-on arts and crafts, train tables and coloring sheets. There will also be storytelling, videos and live music. The Day Out takes place at Fillmore Central Park at 250 Central Ave., Fillmore. Tickets are $18 for everyone two and older and are available by calling 866-468-7630 or visiting the Fillmore and Western website.

Moorpark Arts Festival: Celebrate the arts along Moorpark's High Street from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The will feature hand-made arts and crafts vendors, performing arts and fine art displays as well as some opportunities to get your hands dirty and make your own works of art. Admission is free.

Simi Valley Blues Festival: Performing at the Blues Festival this year are Tommy Castro, Cirtis Salgado, Walter Trout, The Delgado Brothers with special guest Sherry Pruitt and Michael John and the Bottom Line. The event benefits the American Diabetes Association, the nonprofit Ventura County Blues Society and local Kiwanis charities. Tickets are $25 ($30 at the gate) for adults and $5 for children 8-12. Children 7 and younger get in free with a paid adult. Tickets are available on the Blues Festival website.

Shakespeare High: This award-winning, feature-length film by Kevin Spacey tells the story of a group of teenagers who, despite expectations and the odds, become involved with their high school drama programs and are determined to succeed at one of the most prestigious Shakespeare festivals in the country. Some of the actors will be present to answer audience questions following the movie, which begins at noon at the High Street Arts Center. Free.

SUNDAY

Chili Cook-Off and Car Show: Sanctioned by the International Chili Society, this Thousand Oaks event will feature live music, food and beverages, bounce houses, kids crafts and games, plus arts and crafts vendors in addition to the chili cook-pff and classic car show. It takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Conejo Creek Park South (near the intersection of Janss Road and the 23 Freeway) in T.O. Admission is $10 for adults. Children 12 and younger get in free.
