Collision Resulting in Spillage of Battery Acid Causes Closure of Kuehner Drive On-Ramp

A collision between a truck, carrying car batteries, and a Jeep caused the truck to overturn, spilling batteries and battery acid onto the 118 Tuesday morning.

No major injuries were reported.

The accident, which happened at approximately 6:30 a.m., occurred when Edward Bergara, 25, of Santa Clarita, heading westbound on the 118 westbound and driving an International box truck, drifted off the road towards the right shoulder, according to a CHP Moorpark report.

The box truck overturned and spilled its load as it traveled down the dirt embankment directly into the path of the Jeep, driven by Ilia Ford, 31, of Simi Valley, said the report.

Ford swerved her vehicle towards the right to avoid colliding with the box truck, but the load spilled by the box truck collided with the Jeep, said the report.

As a result of the collision, numerous batteries were thrown onto the highway causing battery acid to be spilled onto the roadway and shoulder, the report said.

Bergara sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Los Robles Hospital.

The Kuehner Drive on-ramp to westbound SR-118 will remain closed while the clean up takes place.  The closure is expected to last several hours.
