Driver Killed in Balcom Canyon Road Accident ID'd as West Hills Resident

Janette Oakes-Brin was the wife of the West Hills Neighborhood Council president.

A woman killed  in an accident along the back roads west of Moorpark Tuesday night was the wife of the president of the West Hills Neighborhood Council.

Ventura County Fire Depart personnel pronounced Janette Oakes-Brin, 56, dead at the scene of the accident, near Stockton and Balcom Canyon roads, according to a statement issued by the California Highway Patrol.

Her husband is Daniel Brin.

Around 8:20 p.m. Oakes-Brin was driving her 2009 Volvo west on Stockton road, approaching Balcom Canyon Road while a 16-year-old girl driving a  2003 BMW north on Balcom Canyon Road at an unknown speed. Oakes-Brin entered the intersection directly in front of the BMW, the CHP statement said. The BMW driver was unable to take evasive action and the front of the BMW collided with the driver side door of the Volvo, according to the CHP.

Nathan Brin, 21, of West Hills was a passenger in the Volvo and was transported to Los Robles Hospital due to minor injuries while the driver of the BMW sustained minor injuries and was transported to St. John's Pleasant Valley Hospital, the statement said.

The CHP does not suspect alcohol was a factor in the collision, which remains under investigation.

Services will be 2 p.m., Sunday, at Mt. Sinai Memorial Park in Simi Valley, internment will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Janette Oakes-Brin's name to either City of Hope or Project Heifer.

Do the CHP think that texting was a contributing factor?

Did the West bound driver stop at the stop sign? Was the driver of the vehicle north bound speeding? There is adequate visiblity at this country road intersection. But we accept the fact that should a driver blow through the stop sign, there is the inevitable chance for a terrible collision. It is so sad that a death was the result of circumstances such as this.

Very sad, and I heard the crash. I live just across an orange orchard from that intersection, and I have known of many crashes at that intersection. One thing that might improve it's safety, would be to add a "stop ahead" sign, and perhaps even a "cross traffic does not stop" sign to westbound Stockton. Since Balcom is a two-lane road with a 50-55-mph speed limit, the unfamiliar cross traffic may be unaware by appearance of the upcoming intersection, that it's more than just another little dirt road with a 5-mph tractor pulling a box of fruit, which is typically what is approaching on many of Stockton Road's other crossings.
God be with the Brin family, and with the other driver and her family as well. All lives were changed forever that night. Charles

Excuse the secondary posting, but I forgot to also mention that there was a movie filming in progress that day and active into the night, with bright lights and many vehicles crowding around a ranch on the west side of Balcom at Stockton. It's likely that there were distractions to both drivers from activity there. Just before the crash, I heard cannon fire or loud explosions, with bright flashes visible (pyrotechnics for whatever was being filmed, I suppose). I didn't realize that there had been an accident until the fire department started rushing up Balcom Canyon; in initially figured the huge crash was part of the movie.

This is a great place for any child to learn about self confidence. My son was in the Lil DragonRead More program and he learned about dealing with strangers and bullies, while at the same time having lot's of fun. Mr. Anderson is an excellent instructor. He has become a person my son will always admire and remember forever. Unlike many other places, the whole place has a great warm, family atmosphere. Mr. Anderson is not about making money, he is about helping children. My son is now in the Jr. program and we will encourage him to go has long as he wants. It is a great place for any child to make new friends too!
