UPDATE: Early-Morning Explosions Rock Moorpark Neighborhood

A series of explosions in the Peach Hill area of Moorpark may have been caused by a drug-extraction process gone wrong, police say.

Updated: 9 p.m. Thursday

Arrests still have not been made in relation to a series of explosions that literally blew part of the roof off a Moorpark home early Thursday morning, but the three adults inside the house at the time were named in a statement issued by the Ventura County Sheriff's Department Thursday evening.

The explosion occurred while the residents were in the process of making "honey" or hash oil, according to the Sheriff's statement.

Two men—resident Travis Seymour and guest Matthew Anderson, both 34—sustained what the Sheriff's Department called serious burn injuries in the 1:30 a.m. explosion or ensuing fire and were taken away by ambulance for medical treatment, said Senior Deputy Robert Berger, public information officer for the Sheriff's Department. Lindsey Seymour, the 32-year-old wife of Travis Seymour, and their 3-year-old child, were also in the home but reportedly were uninjured. The child is currently under the care of the county's Department of Children's Protective Services, according to Berger.

Berger said officials believe the explosions were caused by complications of a process commonly referred to as "honey oil extraction," in which oil with a high concentration of THC is extracted from parts of marijuana plants, such as stems, that normally would be considered of not much value. Butane is used during the process and officials believe a glitch of some sort in the process of heating the butane may have caused the explosions.

According to a statement issued by the Sheriff's Department Thursday evening, narcotic investigators from the Ventura County Combined Agency Task Force and the Sheriff’s East County Street Team assisted in processing the marijuana extraction lab. Investigators with the California Department of Justice's Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement arrived on the scene mid-morning and investigations were still under way.

Residents who live near the house—located near the intersection of Cedarpine Lane and Shady Point Drive, just blocks from —called the neighborhood safe and friendly but said it's not an area where people are aware of others' business.

"You say hi to everybody, but you don't know what's going on inside the house," said Bernarda Abdelsayed, who lives down the street from the explosion site.

Neighbor Laura Zempel said she and her husband were in bed when the incident began but were awakened by their barking dog. Once they quieted the dog, they became aware of a series of explosions.

"We could hear 'boom, boom, boom,' " Zempel said, adding that her husband went outside to investigate. "He came back in yelling, 'The house down the street is exploding!' "

She said the family that lives next door to the house began evacuating, loading their car with possessions.

Berger said the fire was mainly limited to the garage and attic space of the house where the explosions occurred.

Zempel said her family remained outside watching the events until about 3 a.m. and saw the injured men exiting the house. She said her son described the injuries as looking like "skin dripping off their arms."
