Head-On Collission Stops Traffic on Highway 118

One driver with major injuries was taken to Los Robles Hospital.

UPDATED: 12:45 a.m. Friday

A head-on traffic accident on Highway 118, west of town between Grimes Canyon and Balcom Canyon roads, stopped traffic in both directions Thursday night. As of about 10 p.m., California Highway Patrol personnel were awaiting an accident reconstructionist and estimated it would still be some time before the road was reopened.

The accident occurred at approximately 9:15 p.m. and is currently under investigation, according to Sgt. Steven Curley of the Highway Patrol, who was on the scene.

Curley said the accident is under investigation and the CHP did not yet know which car crossed over to the opposite side of the highway.

According to Curley, a young girl, who was driving what he believed to be a white Honda, was transported to Los Robles Hospital with major injuries. He did not know her current condition, but said it appeared to be severe. Curley said the CHP had to use the jaws of life, cut the front column of the car and break the front seat to remove her from the car.

“We actually had to remove the tire from the front seat; that’s how far back it got pushed,” he said.

The other party, a male, had minor injuries to his left leg and was being released, according to Curley.

There was also a small 8 to 10-week-old puppy in the girl’s vehicle that was injured and is in the care of the animal patrol, Curley said.
