Sheriff's Deputy Fires Weapon at Vehicle

The off-duty deputy believed he was going to be run over, authorities said.

Fearing he was going to be run over, on Monday, an off-duty Ventura County Sheriff's deputy fired his weapon at a vehicle containing people he believed to be thieves, according to a statement issued by the Sheriff's department Tuesday.

At about 9:50 p.m., the deputy, whose name is being withheld during an investigation, confronted the people, who were on private property on the 12200 block of Broadway Road in a dark-colored SUV. The suspects fled the area after the shooting and authorities conducted an extensive search involving ground units, dogs and a helicopter, but were unable to locate the suspects, the statement said.

Investigators with the Sheriff's Major Crimes Unit and Internal Affairs and the District Attorney's Office are investigating the incident, which is standard practice whenever a Sheriff's Department employee is involved in the use of deadly force.
