Moorpark Chamber of Commerce Honors Outstanding Community Members

The Moorpark Chamber of Commerce gave out its annual awards to thank and honor local residents and businesses for their contributions.

A well-loved teacher, an over-achieving teen and our state assemblyman were just a few of the exceptional citizens who were honored at yesterday's Community Awards.

The annual event was hosted by the and held at the . Close to 200 chamber members and guests were in attendance including Mayor Janice Parvin, city council members and representatives of lawmakers.

teacher Diane Davenport drew the most applause during the lunchtime event, after she was named Educator of the Year.

Davenport, married to a fellow teacher, has been teaching at Chaparral for the past 26 years. She also credited for mentoring new teachers and for receiving many prestigious awards around the county.

"Those who know me know that my tears always come with joy," said the 6th grade teacher after receiving her award.

freshman Olivia Sichmeller received the Youth of the Year award for her exemplary contributions to her school and the community, as well as her active involvement in many school activities.

"It's amazing to see so many people here who have changed my life," said the teen, singling out her mom and grandmother in the audience.

California State Assemblyman Jeff Gorell was named Public Servant of the Year, for his commitment to public service even in absentia. Gorell, a third generation navy man, just recently returned from his second deployment to Afghanistan.

Gorell who was in Sacramento was represented by his wife Laura. "He regrets not being here but wishes to thank you all for this great honor," she said.

Lifelong commnity volunteers Steve Carlson and Linda Plaks were named Man and Woman of the Year respectively.

Carlson is best known for his work in publishing and public relations. Plaks is a long-time Relay for Life and Moorpark Historical Society volunteer.

Other awardees were: Shawn McCarthy for Chamber Member of the Year, Richard Buchalter of California Kettle Corn for Entrepreneur of the Year, Fred Greco for Senior of the Year, Carol Sanders for Volunteer of the Year and the for Non-Profit Organization of the Year.
