Moorpark Clinches Playoff Berth With Football Win at Simi Valley

Offense, defense, special teams.

Moorpark High dominated in all facets Friday in a 35-0 football win over Simi Valley (1-8), jumping to a quick 14-point lead in the first quarter while clinching a playoff berth with one week remaining in the Marmonte League.

And many happy returns.

Moorpark's Lance Poole returned an interception for a touchdown to make it 14-0, and by that time Simi Valley had run just one offensive play. Alex Toliver added a 59-yard punt return for a touchdown, and Moorpark later scored on yet another return when Bobby Anzures ran back an interception 56 yards.

"Defensively we played well," Mooraprk coach Tim Lins said. "We got those two scores early, then we kind of petered out offensively after that, but we did what we needed to do."

Moorpark (5-4) forced five turnovers, including two interceptions by Poole, who has recovered nicely from a torn ACL last season.

"It feels really good to have a big game," Poole said. "I missed last year and wanted to come out and play as well as I could. I feel like we are very well prepared. Our coaching staff is great and we have a great defense that is going to help us a lot."

Tyler Peterson rushed for 96 yards, including a 70-yard run that was called back.

Moorpark also scored on Grant Rohach's 19-yard touchdown pass to Cheldon West, and Aaron Stanton's 2-yard run.

"We have to ramp up the intensity level," Lins said. "We have to continue to polish ourselves offensively."
