The girls Musketeers basketball team gets a new coach and the football team gets a transfer player.

MOORPARK LOOKS FOR GIRL POWER WITH NEW COACH

Moorpark High’s girls basketball team had a rough season last year, finishing 9-16, including a 3-11 record in Marmonte League competition, followed by All-Marmonte League returnee Kailee Severt transferring to Oaks Christian. But the Musketeers have a new coach again, Keith Case, who is the fifth coach over the past five seasons, and he appears to have the team headed in the right direction, as Moorpark won a recent summer tournament at Providence High in Burbank.

Jordan Guerrero is one of several two-sport athletes who play football and baseball, along with Jared Mattera, Tyler Ready and a few others.

“At Moorpark, a lot of the kids play both sports,” Moorpark baseball coach Scott Fullerton said. “I’d say about 30 percent of the baseball players play football, too, a lot of impact guys. I’ve gotten used to it, and I enjoy going to the football games and watching them play. I feel like they’re my own kids.”

GOOD PICK-UP FOR MOORPARK COLLEGE

Speaking of two-sport standouts, Moorpark College landed a good one, as Alex Bishop, a top football and baseball player from Valencia High, has arrived.

Bishop passed for more than 3,000 yards in each of the past two football seasons, but he plans to focus on baseball-only at Moorpark. A catcher, Bishop batted .326 with three home runs and 21 RBIs as a senior.
