Players From Around the World Have a Field Day at Moorpark Tournament

Hundreds of local field-hockey players in various divisions descended on Moorpark College for the 40th annual Cal Cup.

Moorpark College played host to the California Cup Memorial Day weekend.

The Cal Cup is a 40-year field-hockey tournament tradition featuring more than 100 teams in various divisions, culminating with the championship game Monday in the Super Competitive Men’s Division, as a Camarillo-based team called the Cougars defeated Ciudad de Buenos Aires 5-2 in the final to win a $5,000 prize.

On the women's side, Team Mexico beat out defending champions, Team Rush'd to claim the women's title.

The Cougars were managed by Tom Scally, a 31-year-old who’s been a member of the USA National team for seven years. He’s from Thousand Oaks, and he attended Oak Park High and Cal Lutheran. The coach was Andrew Bunya.

The score was tied 1-1 at halftime before the Cougars pulled away.

In addition to Scally, who plays a position called “center half,” the other members of the team were Jon Ginolfi, Binh Hoang, Andy Thornton, Ryan Langford, Patrick Harris, Jarred Martin, Rutger Wiese, Steve Mann, Patrick Cota, Will Holt, Shawn Nakamura, Roderik Huber, Nicolas Renaer, Martijn Havenga and Andrew Zayac.

The Cougars qualified for the championship with a 7-0 win over L.A. Tigers on Sunday in the semifinals. In pool competition, the Cougars went 2-0-1 and outscored opponents 16-2. Ciudad de Buenos Aires went 3-0 in pool completion, outscoring opponents 12-2 before defeating Mexico 1-0 on Sunday to qualify for the championship.

In the Super Women’s championship Monday, Mexico won with a 2-0 win over Rush’d.

In the Mixed Social division, Moorpark finished 2-2 in pool completion. In Mixed 10-under, the Moorpark finished third, and in Mixed 12-under, Moorpark also finished third.

Other divisions went all the way down to 8-under.
