Buy and Use Fireworks Legally in Fillmore

Fireworks of any kind are not legal in Moorpark.

If the Fourth of July just isn't the Fourth of July for you if you don't get to "draw" in the air with sparklers or set off a few Ground Bloom Flowers, you're not entirely out of luck.

Though fireworks are illegal in most parts of the county—Moorpark included—there are plenty to be had and used in Filmore, just a short drive across Grimes Canyon.

"Safe and sane" fireworks went on sale June 28 and are legal within city limits through noon Friday, July 5. In fact, fireworks booths are the primary fundraiser of the year for many of the city's non-profit groups, including churches, Little League and philanthropic organizations.

It is not legal to purchase the fireworks in Fillmore and bring them back to Moorpark to set off and a fine of up to $1,000 can be given to those in violation of the law.

In a statement regarding fireworks use, the Ventura County Sheriff's Department shared the following safety tips:

• Only Safe and Sane fireworks bearing the seal of the State Fire Marshal are legal in the city of Fillmore. All other fireworks, including altered Safe and Sane fireworks and those that explode or leave the ground are illegal.

• Kids should not play with fireworks. Fireworks are intended for use by adults in open spaces with plenty of active supervision for every child present.

• Always have a bucket of water on hand to dispose of fireworks and a hose connected to water ready in case of fire.

• Fireworks, including sparklers and flares, can cause serious burns as well as blast injuries that can permanently impair vision and hearing. Teach your children what to do if their  clothing catches on fire — “stop, drop and roll” — and how to call 9-1-1 in an emergency.

• If you witness a crime or fire in progress involving illegal fireworks, call your local authorities by dialing 9-1-1.
